Overview and objectives of the PhD course

Our project was born from the awareness of the substantial unity of method and purpose in research on the ancient world in Tuscany and, through the interpretation of the previous programs of the universities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena, it aims to guarantee advanced training on original topics with adequate and innovative tools, on theoretical and practical basis, for the progress of research on the ancient world, for memory and for the enhancement of cultural heritage. The collaboration between the three universities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena allows to reaffirm or increase the already remarkable international level recorded by the previous programs, with the contribution of foreign teachers, with the stay abroad of the students, with the carrying out of didactic activities in English, French, Spanish, German, with the recognition of the European title and with the co-tutorship of the dissertations with foreign universities that allow a strong international opening involving some of the most prestigious centers for research on the ancient world (Autonomous University of Madrid, École Normale Superiéure, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, École Pratique des Hautes Études, Université d’Aix-Marseille, Université Côte d'Azur, Université Grenoble Alpes, Université de Lyon, Université Paul-Valery de Montpellier, Université de Toulouse Jean Jaurés, Universität Hamburg, Universität Köln, Universität Tübingen). The project is divided into three curricula: archeology, philology and anthropology of the ancient world. Within the span of the sectors involved, the interdisciplinarity is evident: CUN Areas 6, 10, 11 and ERC Fields SH2, SH3, SH4, SH5, SH6. The year-by-year didactic activities include seminars and internships in institutions for research on the ancient world in the framework of exchanges and precise agreements.

Collaboration relationships are open to stages and internships with
1. ISPC CNR. With over 180 technicians from various sectors, with its strong propensity for interdisciplinarity, it is the hub of the CNR for research, innovation, training, the transfer of data of the strategic areas on cultural heritage, in international networks of expertise.
2. National Central Library of Florence. It promotes knowledge of its heritage through specific initiatives, also within the framework of collaboration agreements with foreign entities, and develops its research and didactic vocation within the framework of the agreements stipulated with universities.
3. Italian Archaeological School of Athens. It is the only Italian institution of archeology outside the border, under the direction of the MIC and the MUR. It carries out, promotes and supports numerous research activities on the Greek cultural heritage and the neighboring areas in the vast time from prehistory to the Byzantine age, for relationships with the East, Africa, continental Europe, in the fields of archeology, history of art, topography, epigraphy, numismatics, history of religions, architecture, literature, and philosophy. It takes care of the training of young scholars, of research programs, and of the dissemination of results and the enhancement of the Greek cultural heritage.
4. Interdepartmental Center for Anthropological Studies on Ancient Culture. It organizes international conferences and seminars. It offers the doctorate a Library, full of texts and digital tools useful for research.
5. Florentine Museum and Institute of Prehistory. The Museum operates in research, teaching and advanced training in archeology with a particular focus on prehistory.
6. Papyrological Institute “G. Vitelli". The Institute holds thousands of Greek, Latin, as well as Demotic, Coptic and Arab papyri, and promotes the organization of research and training seminars. It offers the doctorate the unavoidable basis for research activities. With training seminars, it will enrich the path of the students for a stable acquisition of skills.
7. Center d’Études sur la Pensée Antique "Kairos kai Logos". The Center offers the doctorate scientific collaboration for the interpretation of cultural processes of the classical and imperial ages, between Greek poleis and Rome, with particular attention to the Mediterranean basin. Of great importance is here the attention to the Nachleben of ancient thought in contemporary thought.
8. British School at Rome. It is a UK research institute and promotes knowledge, with contributions from UK and Commonwealth scholars and artists, on all aspects of cultural tradition in Italy. It favors exchanges in the international arena. The British School at Rome offers numerous opportunities to place pupils in the productive world and has militant relationships with higher education partnerships in the United Kingdom.

The doctorate, which brings together professors from Italian or foreign universities, currently awards scholarships by competition to qualified candidates in the disciplines of ancient sciences and archeology, to encourage their growth over the three-year period with an articulated educational perspective in the name of interdisciplinarity and flexibility: it intends to promote awareness of the substantial unity of the objectives of research in the field of ancient world studies
and, through the merging of the previous programs of the universities of Pisa, Florence, Siena, homogeneous in the choices of method and in the research perspectives, it aims to train students capable of tackling original issues with adequate and innovative theoretical and practical tools for the study of the past, for the memory and enhancement of cultural heritage. The doctorate intends to increase the already considerable level of internationalization previously achieved by the previous programs, with the participation of foreign teachers, with the reception of foreign students, with the continuation of research activities of an international context, with the stay abroad of the students, with the holding of lectures and seminars in English or in other languages (French, Spanish and German), with the co-supervision of the dissertations with foreign universities, also for the achievement of the title Europaeus.
