The joint supervision of the Ph.D. thesis is a specific form of internationalization only for those Ph.D. students that confer a double or joint title legally recognised in both countries of the partner universities. The joint supervision path allows Ph.D. students to experience the reality of two different university and scientific systems, to expand and increase their linguistic and intercultural skills as well as to encourage the mobility of doctoral students.
The doctoral thesis will be developed under the joint supervision of two dissertation directors (supervisors), one from the University of Pisa and the other from the foreign University, respectively.
The discussion of the thesis is only one and thus, is carried out only in one location.
Requirements
The basic requirements for activating a joint supervision are the following:
- enrolment in a doctoral program at the University of Pisa or a foreign University;
- be up to date with university contribution (only for outbound joint supervision);
- approval of the Faculty Board of the University of Pisa;
- obligation to conduct alternate research periods in both Universities, according to the procedures defined in the agreement;
- stipulation of a joint supervision agreement.
How to apply for a joint supervision
The application to activate the joint supervision must be submitted to the "Graduate" Sector - Ph.D. students by the supervisor of the University of Pisa.
Joint supervision agreement
The agreement for activating a joint supervision cannot be stipulated in the last year of the Ph.D. course (III year), it refers to a single PhD student and it specifies the agreed-upon conditions between the two Universities:
- research activities;
- university contribution which will be paid in one of the two Universities (generally the seat of the first university enrolment), except for the annual regional tax which the Ph.D. student will have to pay each year to the University of Pisa;
- final examination, examination committee and issue of the title.
