Overview and objectives of the PhD course

The PhD Programme in Linguistic Disciplines and Foreign Literatures (DiLLeS) is one of three at the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics of the University of Pisa. Their shared aims are to offer highly specialised instruction for PhD candidates working in the humanities, and promote pioneering research. The DiLLeS doctoral programme is organised into two curricula: 'Modern and Comparative Foreign Literatures (French, English, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Slavic, German)' and 'General, Historical, Applied, Computational, Educational and Modern Languages Linguistics (French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Baltic languages)'. They reflect the research interests of the members of the Faculty, which includes professors and researchers of the University of Pisa, alongside renowned scholars from foreign universities, in line with the University’s internationalisation policy. The Faculty members’ research activity and a rich yearly calendar of formative events, including thematic seminars, lectures, conferences and workshops in the individual disciplinary areas represented, form the pillars of our students’ specialized education. Every year in February, the PhD programme organizes the so-called “Giornate del Dottorato”, a two-day event that brings together professors and students from various research areas to exchange ideas on themes and theoretical-methodological models of inter-curricular interest. A number of other initiatives are organised in collaboration with the other PhD candidates in the Department to promote interdisciplinary dialogue among students and researchers working in the humanities. DiLLeS students also participate in the cross-curricular seminars organised by the University of Pisa.
The PhD programme in Linguistic Disciplines and Foreign Literatures (DiLLeS) aims to provide highly-specialised knowledge and offer its PhD candidates the opportunity to carry out innovative research in linguistic, modern philological and literary studies. At the end of the course, each doctoral student will have acquired the specific disciplinary competences required to carry out research in their field. More specifically, the students enrolled in the ‘General, Historical, Applied, Computational, Educational and Modern Languages Linguistics’ curriculum, will develop expertise in and understanding of theoretical models of linguistic analysis (both synchronic and diachronic) and their applications to both ancient and modern languages. The students of the 'Modern and Comparative Foreign Literatures' curriculum will become highly competent in the history of the main European literatures and in their defining features, as well as in the theories and methods of text analysis with respect to the main continental traditions. In addition, the cross-curricular courses offered by University of Pisa cultivate useful soft skills, such as advanced communication skills in academic English.
