Overview and objectives of the PhD course
The PhD program in Mathematics at the University of Pisa benefits of a long tradition of excellence of the mathematical school in this town, and its strong points are the international scientific network developed by the researchers of the Mathematics Department, and a
close connection to the Scuola Normale Superiore, one of the leading institutions for Mathematics at European level.
Within the Mathematics Department there are several research groups of international renown, from those with a long-established tradition, such as Geometry and Mathematical Analysis, to several that have been steadily expanding in the last decades, both in Pure
Mathematics (Logic, Algebra and Number Theory) and Applied Mathematics (Probability, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Education). We can thus offer to prospective students a broad range of options.
Our aim is to provide capable and motivated students with all necessary tools to start a research career in the areas mentioned above. To this end, students can benefit from the specialized courses offered both by the Mathematics Department (of the University of Pisa) and by the Scuola Normale Superiore (many of which are taught by internationally recognized experts) and also from the intense seminar activity and numerous conferences and summer schools organized by both institutions, and by the "Centro diRicerca Matematica E. De Giorgi".
A key step at the beginning of a research career is becoming part of an international scientific community, and our graduate students can achieve this goal in different ways: by the scientific network of the researchers in the Mathematics Department, attending key
international scientific events, and by research periods in institutions outside Italy. It is also of help the presence a number of graduate students from other universities who complete their PhD studies in Pisa.
