Overview and objectives of the PhD courseo

The training, research and evaluation activities envisaged by the Ph.D. Program will take place at the Universities of Pisa, Florence and Siena, except for the research stays (abroad or in Italy) planned in line with the training and research activities envisaged by the Ph.D. program.
The Ph.D. Program requires all Ph.D. students to follow, over the three years, six courses and three cycles of seminars, to present a thesis proposal at the end of the first year, a report on the progress of the research carried out at the end of the second year and then the thesis at the end of the third year.
The Ph.D. Program favours the enhancement of research results, guarantees the protection of intellectual property, ensuring open access to the public to the research results and related data in the shortest time and with the least possible limitations, according to the "Open science "and" FAIR Data " principles.
The Ph.D. Program favours the international dimension of research training for Ph.D. students by pursuing a close collaboration with some important foreign universities, all directly represented in the Ph.D. Steering Committee: Ecole Polytechnique (France), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA), Northeastern University (USA), Stanford University (USA), University of Stuttgart (Germany), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (USA).
The Ph.D. Program has also set up an international Advisory Board for the Course (https://dottorato.di.unipi.it/ab/) with representatives of European Commission, Google (USA), IBM (USA), Huawei (France), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA).
The Ph.D. Program currently has three joint supervisions in progress with Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC, Brazil, cycle 35), has recently successfully concluded three other joint supervisions with Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PURCS, Brazil, cycle 34), Universitè Paris-Saclay (France, cycle 33), West University of Timisoara (Romania, cycle 33).
The Ph.D. Program also currently has five Ph.D. students with scholarships funded by Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks: H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020 # 956229 ALPACA, H2020 MSCA-ITN 2018 # 813170 EVOCATION and H2020 MSCA-ITN 2017 # 764759 MINOA.
The Ph.D. Program also favours the international dimension of research training by exploiting the 140+ cooperation agreements of the University of Pisa with universities and foreign institutions.
The general objective of the Ph.D. Program in Computer Science is to train researchers and innovators in Computer Science and Technologies, to make them capable to carry out original research, to enhance research results and to foster and manage innovation in both the public and private sectors.
The Graduates trained by the Ph.D. Program in Computer Science are capable to foster and manage innovation both in the applications of information technology and other sectors, starting from public administrations, and in the various multidisciplinary areas of information technology, from bioinfomatics, to smart health to smart agriculture to industrial technologies started with Industry 4.0, just to name a few.
The Ph.D. Program also aims at training researchers and innovators capable of promoting and managing the dissemination of innovative models for research in IT and non-IT companies, promoting the transformation and digital evolution of production processes.
